Wright Brothers Soho Oyster House
I had mini pre-New Years celebration at the Wright Brothers in Soho with my friend O. I learnt that it is apparently a French thing to stuff yourself silly with seafood during Christmas and avoid eating meat (or at least that's what I chose to take away from O's explanation of how the French celebrate Christmas!). The entire month of December has been a roast-meat-extravaganza from the amazing roast shoulder of pork my friend Am.L cooked to lovely roast turkey with all the trimming for Christmas at F.'s house. I welcomed the opportunity to celebrate the end of a lovely year with a meat-free dinner at the Wright Brothers in Soho.
The original Wright Brothers restaurant in Borough Market is well known for their oyster raw bar and their Soho location off of Kingly street is a perfect spot away from the crowds on Regent Street. The restaurant is quite spacious and I think even if you don't make a reservation in advance, you might be able to get a table.

We started with a trio of oysters: Duchy Natives, Cumbrae and Lindisfarne . It was fun to try different types of oysters and get a sense of how they differ. Both of us preferred the Lindisfarne oysters - they had a nice mineral taste. I found the Cumbrae a bit too briny and the Duchy Natives had much too strong aftertaste.
It was a bit disappointing to arrive at 8:30pm and be told they run out of things on their menu. O. really wanted to have the Lagustines but luckily satisfied her shellfish craving with some lovely fresh Atlantic prawns and a humongous whole Dorset Crab. I learned first hand from O. on how to crack away and tear apart a crab - quite exhausting work. In the end, the poor thing was completely decimated by us.
A bowl of Whitebait with tartare sauce caught my eye and soon we were munching on these little crumbed fried fish.

We ended the meal with with one of their cooked mains - Cuttlefish cooked with chickpeas served with bread which was simply delicious and my favourite dish for the night. Along with a bottle of white wine (Picpoul), the bill came up to around £50 pounds each. which was a tad bit expensive but worth it given the quality and freshness of the seafood.
